A word of warning for anyone using VGA monitors and are thinking about buying a cheap converter for their Pi:
Don’t kid yourself. Cheap HDMI>VGA converters are just that. I plugged this £5 saturday night special into the RaPi and at first I thought I’d been conned because nothing happened…
It turns out you need to screw the VGA lead really tightly into the end of the dongle to get anything out of it.
When it finally gets around to displaying anything the results are less than pleasing; a slightly blurred image that ‘sparkles’ if you move the cable even a little bit.
I suspect that many of us will still be using VGA input monitors* but I see now the folly of my el-cheapo HDMI>VGA compared with the ultimate win of my HDMI>DVI cable I currently have running on my set up at home.
*Some may argue that stepping down HDMI is pretty pointless anyway (and they’d be right); but VGA is still fairly prevalent in both my home and work and getting a dongle to convert to VGA seemed like a good idea at the time.
