I quite enjoy a Cigar every so often but up until recently I didn’t have an ash tray that was befitting my quality smokes.
With this in mind I set out to make myself an Ashtray…
I started out with some basic modelling clay which promised to “air dry overnight”. This extravagant claim couldn’t have been further from the truth as it took the stuff several days to fully dry into a state that allowed me to use a file to shape it further.
Here is my ashtray starting to take shape, I had an idea about making something that would fit nicely into the palm of the hand so I just filed away the excess until I had a nice smooth flat surface on all sides.
Here it is after a couple of days of filing and shaping and sanding it smooth, it wasn’t easy to get right, but it was quite therapeutic.
I decided to go for a Havana Club colour scheme and painted it bright red:
Once it was coated a few times in a good layer of paint and fully dry I crept into the house and liberated my wife’s best clear nail varnish and gave it a few good coats…
Here is my ashtray doing what it does best (cradling a Cuban cigar (a hoyo de monterrey)) and I’m very happy with the way this thing came out.
The Cigar was delicious and fit in the Ashtray very well. I could do with some more to try out on it, feel free to send me some samples!
